Countering Hate: A Community Conversation and Guide for Action

  • 2015 S Interstate 35, Ste 110 Austin, Texas 78741 (map)

The recent tragic events in Charlottesville and corporate anti-diversity rhetoric that has hit the media have shed light on a glaring issue we as a nation have tried to deny and diminish. Racism, Sexism and Hate. We are NOT the post-racial, post-sexist, post-homophobic society we want to believe we are. We can no longer be silent. We must explore the uncomfortable space where understanding and growth as a community happens.

Please join YWCA in a Community Conversation and Teach-in during which we will explore these issues from a personal, community-wide and action-oriented perspective which will include a “Know Your Rights” Training for activists. The agenda is as follows:

9-10AM: Conversation with Community Leaders
10-11AM: Teach-in Managing the Emotional Response (Triggers) in times of crisis and upheaval
11-12PM “Know your rights” provided by the Austin Community Law Center: Planning a demonstration, your rights when attending a demonstration, legal contours of civil disobedience and/or legal observation, etc.

Minimum $5 donation is suggested to cover the cost of materials and refreshments and allow them to continue to offer these types of free/low-cost events in the future. For more information click here.
