FemBeat: Chingonas Online Premiere

2018-06-26 - Sam and Kayla of FemBeat.png

FemBeat, the documentary series telling the stories of different self-identifying women and non-binary folx in our community, is premiering its latest episode. In a collaboration with Hustle for the Cause, FemBeat: Chingonas talks to different women about the historically controversial word, “chingona”. Watch and listen to their reinterpretations, stories, and lessons learned.

FemBeat is the collaborative effort of Kayla Galang and Samantha Skinner. Kayla is a filmmaker, photographer, and creative activist. Having grown up in Southeast San Diego, California, much of her storytelling is rooted in nostalgia, adolescence, and Asian girlhood. Since 2010, she has written, directed, and edited a number of narrative and documentary projects, which have been official selections at South by Southwest, Austin Film Festival, and Florida Film Festival. She strives to tell stories that are thoughtful and representative of herself and her friends of color. Samantha is a documentary filmmaker and audio engineer interested in exploring womanhood and social justice through digital media. Her personal experiences with sexism while working in the film and music industry since 2011 inspired her to embrace feminism and raise awareness about the political movement. Her work as a director has been featured in festivals like Austin Short Film Fest, WAMMFest, and Babes Fest, and her work as an audio engineer in South by South West, Fantastic Fest, and Fusebox Festival.
