On July 13, 2015 Sandra Bland lost her life while detained in the Waller County jail in Texas. She was detained because an officer did not respect her and was incapable of showing compassion and empathy. The encounter that led to Sandra’s death illustrates the need for advocacy and healing. This can only occur by taking the time to build community with one another. Building community aids in cultivating and creating cultural appropriate advocacy and healing spaces for communities of the global majority systemically ostracized and oppressed.
#SandyStillSpeaks Day of Advocacy and Healing consist of three events beginning at 9 am at the NAACP community room, followed by an afternoon yoga flow and journaling, with the day ending with Community Movement from the Texas Capitol to the historic Huston-Tillotson University in East Austin.
