Today, weโ€™re preparing for STATE OF THE UTERUS 2020, our annual party for progress raising funds for reproductive health, human rights initiatives and grassroots nonprofits. Every year, we bring artists, makers, creatives, entrepreneurs and thoughts leader in Austin together to challenge harmful stigmas against bodily autonomy and abortion access.

In anticipation for tonightโ€™s event, weโ€™ve put together a 12-step list of actions you can take right now to show up for reproductive rights in Austin, Texas. This list has been penned by BBATX board member and reproductive rights advocate Alex Perez-Puelles.

Here are twelve things you can start doing now to fight for your body autonomy and support your community:

  1. Donate to any (or all!) of the beneficiaries from STATE OF THE UTERUS 2020, including the Afiya Center, Deeds Not Words, Casa Marianella, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas and us

  2. Do your research and make informed voting decisions. Make sure youโ€™re getting your information from diverse sources. Seek out experts, and do not get sucked into the zeitgeist of public opinion. (We recommend keeping up with voter guides published by the League of Women Voters in Austin, Texas.)

  3. Listen to and learn from women of color. Hereโ€™s a good reading list to start with.

  4. Donate menstrual health items to Flo Code, so they can continue providing period care items to displaced folks in Austin, Texas.

  5. Sign up for the Janeโ€™s Due Process newsletter to get alerts about volunteering opportunities to help pregnant minors in Texas.

  6. Learn more about how to support your nonbinary, gender-non-conforming and trans friends and family in your community with this comprehensive guide on gender inclusivity by PFLAG.

  7. Learn more about the barriers and risks independent abortion clinics are facing around the country through the Abortion Care Networkโ€™s latest report.

  8. Support a fundraiser for your local abortion fund, like Lilith Fund Texas (or get involved by attending one of their events).

  9. Speak out publicly about abortion and share credited information to help bust common myths and start a convo with your friends and family. You can even attend an Abortion Teach-In at our headquarters on February 20 to dig deeper in a supportive environment.

  10. Make sure you are registered to vote before the primaries (which end in June)!

  11. If youโ€™re in college, become a Change-Maker on campus through Deeds Not Words.

  12. Learn more about the intersections between bodily autonomy, reproductive rights and sex work. Support sex workersโ€™ rights. Get involved and/or donate to the Sex Workers Outreach Project (SWOP USA).
